Need a free pattern for a crocheted flower applique? Try this one! This flower applique lies reasonably flat, making it ideal for stitching to a variety of surfaces. While there's some texture and dimension here, as there is with all crochet work, the real "oomph" comes more from the colorwork.
In addition to the free crochet pattern, you'll find work-in-progress photos that show you how to do the color changes for the flower center.
The finished flower will come in handy for use in many different types of craft projects.
Skill Level: Intermediate

Materials:

Yarn:

My sample is worked with Cascade 220, which is a worsted weight wool yarn.
This is a good project for using up scrap yarn. You’ll need 3 different colors of yarn:
  • Color A- In my sample flower, color A is the royal blue color; its official color name is “Cobalt Heather.”

  • Color B - In my sample flower, color B is the vibrant lime green color, named “Primavera.”

  • Color C - - In my sample flower, color C is the light blue color, named “Robin Egg Blue.”
Feel free to substitute other colors, brands, fibers and weights of yarn when you crochet your own flower appliques.
When choosing different colors, keep in mind that the color you choose for the flower center should contrast with the other two colors you'll be using.

Crochet Hook:

I used a size H / 5.0 mm crochet hook to crochet my sample flower, but you can use any hook that works well with your chosen yarn or thread.
Other: Tapestry Needle for weaving in ends

Finished Size:

My sample flower measures about 4” in diameter across its widest point. Your flower measurement will vary depending on the supplies you use and other factors such as your individual style of crocheting.

Abbreviations Used in This Pattern:

  • ch = chain
  • sc = single crochet
  • sl st = slip stitch
  • st = stitch
  • yo = yarn over = wrap the yarn over the crochet hook

Crocheting the Center of the Flower:

Using color A, Ch 5. Sl st to form a ring.
Round 1: Work 10 sc in ring. Sl st to join to first sc in the round.
Round 2: In this round, you’re going to switch back and forth between colors A and B. Work 2 sc sts in each sc from the previous round – 2 sc in color A, 2 sc in color B, repeat all the way around for a total of 20 sc. To accomplish this, work the first sc as usual, but when you do the second sc, switch colors before you complete the stitch. (See photos above.) Sl st to join to first sc in the round.
Cut color A and end off; do not cut color B yet.

Crocheting the Flower Petals

  • This flower has 5 petals total.
  • Work the flower petals using color C.
  • Crochet the petals directly into the last round of the center of the flower.
  • Work each petal separately before starting the next petal.
  • Work through both loops of each stitch.
  • I suggest taking a look at a photo of the flower with petals added, before you actually start this part.
Flower Petal, Row 1: Using color C, work 3 sc in any 3 sc sts from round 2.
Ch 1, turn.
Flower Petal, Row 2: Sc in first sc, work 2 sc in next sc, sc in next sc ( 4 sc total.)
Ch 1, turn.
Flower Petal, Row 3: Sc in each sc across the row ( 4 sc total.)
Ch 1, turn.
Flower Petal, Row 4: Sc in first sc, draw up a loop in next sc, draw up a loop in following sc, then YO and pull through all 3 loops on hook. (1 decrease worked.) Sc in next sc.
Ch 1, turn.
Flower Petal, Row 5: Work 3 sc, 1 in each st across.
Ch 1, turn.
Flower Petal, Row 6: Skip first sc, draw up a loop in next sc, draw up a loop in following sc, yo and pull through all 3 loops on hook.
If working one of the first 4 petals, end off and weave in the loose end. For petal #5, do not end off.
Begin the next flower petal by attaching color C to the flower center, leaving one st in between each petal.
When you’ve worked all 5 petals, it will look like this.

Slip Stitch Outlines

To make the flower center "pop," pick up color B and work a round of sl sts around the outer perimeter of round 2. (To get a better idea of how this looks when complete, you can comparethis photo against this photo.) End off.
Then pick up color C where you left off, and add slip stitches around the outer edges of your flower petals too. This isn’t going to be a precise process; there isn’t any obvious formula for where to put each stitch. Think freeform crochet here.
Try to place your stitches as evenly and carefully as possible, keeping them close to the outer edges of the flower petals. This will tidy up the crooked-looking edges nicely so the outer edge of your flower has a smooth, uniform look.
When you’ve worked sl sts all the way around, pull the loop left on your hook through your first sl st to the back of the work, then cut the yarn and end off.
Weave in all your loose ends securely using a tapestry needle.

Exotic Flower Applique

Crocheted Exotic Flower Applique Free Pattern

Revised by Sandi Marshall, From An Antique Design
Sew this crocheted flower applique to other items as a decorative accent. You could make the flower with either yarn or with thread (adjust hook size used accordingly).
I rewrote the antique directions for this pattern, so that it would be in today's crochet pattern terminology and easier to follow. Below, you will see the antique directions given first, for comparison, with my rewritten directions following.
If you'd like to see how it was to crochet from patterns that the crocheters in the early 1900's had to work from, you may like to try crocheting this flower from the antique directions first, then crochet from the rewritten directions, after that. Of course, you can skip right to the modern directions, if you would rather.
For Comparison, This is what the antique directions said (exactly as written and in its entirety) - -
Antique Directions: Ch 10, form ring ch 6 - 5 tr. tr (thread over hook 4 times) in ring, ch 6, 1 tight sl st in ring. Ch 6. Repeat this petal once more. Then ch 11, 1 sl st in second st from hook. 1 sc, 2 dc, 2 dt, 2 dc in 7 sts, ch 3, 1 sl st in ring. Chain 12 instead of 11 for next petal. Work same way only 3 dt instead of 2 dt, ch 3, 1 sl st in ring. Then ch 22, 1 picot - that is - 1 sl st in 5th st from hook, 5 picots each worked in sl st of one before, then 14 sl sts in 14 stitches, ch 3, 1 sl st in ring - this will form the long ends of the flower. Repeat and then work third and fourth petal and close ring. - - End of antique directions.
Rewritten Directions by Sandi Marshall - -
Materials Used In This Example:
Worsted weight yarn
Size G hook
Finished Size, when made with yarn: 6" wide, at widest point x 6 1/2" long
Thread: For a smaller flower, make it with a thread size of your choice. A popular size is size 10 thread with a U.S. size 7 or 8 steel crochet hook Other hook sizes matched to thread sizes

I love making small ornaments for embellishment and here are the Spring motif crochet patterns of butterfly, flower and leaf. Since they only have 2 rounds of crochet, thus, they are pretty simple and quick to make. You can use stash yarns or lace threads of various colors to crochet, the finished size depends on what kind of yarn or lace thread you used. I used lace thread and DMC perle cotton #8 which are the stashes from my previous projects of crochet bead necklace and lace trim handkerchief. The lighter / thinner the yarn or thread you use, the smaller the finished piece will be if crochet with a matching hook size.

Butterfly, flower & leaf are popular embellishment. They are great to put onto many things apart from those I have made here. Just a suggestion, the flower bouquet shown on the photo frame can be put on bags, notebook cover etc. The next thing I could think of would be a card for mommies for the upcoming mother’s day, or, a greeting card for any occasion. Also, instead of clothes pin & hair clips, what about make it for hair bands, ear rings, necklace pendants, rings? Not to mention about the flower brooch, there are so many ways to use it…. I pinned it on my dolly lampshade.

Hair clips are my daughter’s favorite, so I made a pair of flower + butterfly for her. I think the next thing she would want from my crafty hands are ear rings and hair band :)

Get the details on how to crochet them after this jump:

Use tapestry needle to bring the yarn end to the starting side of the leaf through midrib.

crochet Butterfly Flower Leaf patternPlan your design and determine the quantities and colors of each butterfly, flower & leaf you need for your project.
sew crochet flower bouquetFor Photo Frame:
Cut burlap or hemp cloth and fringe the edges by removing a few warps’ and wefts’ thread.
Position the flowers and leafs, secure them with pin.
Sew or glue them with hot glue. I prefer sew because the burlap could be too weak to hold the flower in place with glue.

crochet flower bouquet patternTie a ribbon and sew it on the “stems” of the flowers and leafs.
position & glue the motif on the felt or photo’s plastic cover or on the frame of your photo frame.
If you want to put photo in the frame, position the motif away from the main display area so that it won’t block your beautiful photo. Glue some butterflies and flowers to decorate.

crochet clothespin flower patternFor Clothes Pin & Hair Clips:
Make a knot on the yarn tails at the back of the crochet flower, trim away the excess yarn but not too near to the knot. Glue the flower on the clothes pin with hot glue.
Do the same to hair clip, hair barrette, bobby pin, hair claw, hair band, bun holder etc…

crochet flower bouquet patternFor Flower Bouquet Brooch:
Crochet 8 flowers, sew them together from behind and minimize the appearance of stitches in front. Use similar sewing thread color to camouflage the stitches within the bouquet just in case they did showed up on the front.
Take 2 yarns from behind to the front and tie a knot to secure the “stems” in place just like a flower bouquet.

crochet flower brooch materialA brooch pin and a small piece of felt enough to cover the back of the pin.
crochet flower brooch pin tutorialSew brooch pin to the back of the flower bouquet, again, try not to show any stitches in front.
crochet flower brooch backCover the back of the brooch pin with a small piece of felt either by gluing or by sewing along the edges.   http://www.craftpassion.com/2011/04/crochet-butterfly-flower-leaf-pattern-tutorial.html
